These are approx 1500 years ago. πŸ”ͺπŸ”ͺπŸ”ͺ Everyone would have owned a knife as an everyday, useful tool, so it makes sense that they are buried with their knives. πŸ—‘πŸ—‘πŸ—‘ Unfortunately they are no longer made of metal, just corrosion, but we can still see traces of the leather which was the sheath, and the handle, usually bone or horn. πŸ”ͺπŸ”ͺπŸ”ͺ Identifying the materials gives us a richer picture of our heritage and the lives and technology of these highly resourceful people. πŸ—‘πŸ—‘πŸ—‘ #findsfriday #archaeology #saxons #rust #corrosion #metal #heritage #ancienthistory #museum #knife

It's a big shiny stud that went on the front of a shield and looked real fancy. πŸ›‘πŸ›‘πŸ›‘πŸ›‘ The iron has corroded, and the blue you can see inside is copper corrosion. So originally, there was a decorative doodah on the front! πŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’Ž I'm going to glue it back together, and x-ray it so we can see more clearly what it looked like. It's not often you come into work and see one of t It's not often you come into work and see one of these. This is an absolutely perfect (and beautifully preserved) late iron age cremation urn. 🏺🏺🏺🏺🏺 That's 2000+ years old. 🏺🏺🏺🏺🏺 The contents are bone, and it fell out of a cliff face to be found by a walker. 🏺🏺🏺🏺🏺 Close up you can still see the tool marks, and I bet there will even be fingerprints. This absolutely blows me away, to come so close to people, just like us, experiencing grief as we do, and creating their own rituals. 🏺🏺🏺🏺🏺 #archaeology #ironage #ironagebritain #museumworkers #heritage #ritual #ancienthistory
